According to the Pew Hispanic Center, Hispanics are growing at a rate of over 16%. This staggering growth has forced us to look at the Latino community in more detail and wonder if the awakening in the United States by the Freethinkers is taking place among Latinos as well. The common belief is that most Latinos immigrants and their children born in the States tend to be very religious, that they do not think critically and are superstitious. That is why at Hafree, we want to create and encourage an environment where Latinos can learn about Separation of Church and state and how to think critically. Challenging ideas allows people to think “outside the box”, question the lack of evidence while educating themselves and becoming part of the reality based community. Many modern philosophers, scientists, artists, and common folks have become more vocal about their view of the world. These brave men and women now encourage everyone to think critically, use reason, and question all dogmas.
In early 2011, organization founder David Tamayo decided to start Librepensadores Washington DC and asked Lorena Rios and Yamileth Coreas-Leiva to join him in this endeavor. Soon after and as other freethinkers quickly joined this great cause, the name changed to Hispanic American Freethinkers. After much wine, great conversation, and much discussion, HAFree has become the great organizations it is today.
