FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why form a Hispanic Freethought organization?

A: The Hispanic community in the U.S. has people from all religions, colors, accents, races, etc. but we have some things in common. We tend to believe in more un-natural and superstitious things than other communities and as a result, often charlatans take advantage of this. Due to cultural differences, HAFree’s goals are to teach Hispanics HOW to think, not what to think.

Q: What is a freethinker?

A: A Freethinker is a person who forms opinions about religion and the world on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority, or established Belief. Freethinkers include atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and rationalists. No one can be a freethinker who demands conformity to a bible, creed, or messiah. To the freethinker, revelation is invalid and orthodoxy is no guarantee of truth.

Q: Why is HAFree concerned about the separation of church and state?

A: What’s made the U.S. such a great country for all kinds of thinkers has been this separation wall. We are the first country in the world to have a secular “godless” constitution. In recent decades, religious groups have been chipping away pushing religion into government affairs. This creates a danger that someday we’ll turn into a theocracy where people’s rights will be determined by religious dogma. History has shown that when politics and religion become one, such theocracy has horrible effects on society (i.e. Europe’s Dark Ages).

Q: How can I join?

A: You can download an application and e-mail it (or fax it) to HAFree (download application here).

Q: Can I form a freethinking group in my community?

A: Yes! We encourage Hispanics all over to form their own freethought groups. HAFree will be more than happy to advice you on the many aspects of forming such a group. It is fun, educational, and it helps your community. Once formed, you can easily become affiliated with HAFree (download application here).

Q: Do you have a brochure or something I can give a friend?

A: yes, you can downloaded by clicking here

Q: Why is your main page in English instead of Spanish?

A: HAFree is an organization formed in the United States targeting, for the most part, young Latinos in the U.S. There is a tab on top of the front page that will translate the entire website to Spanish.  Many of our young viewers do not speak Spanish fluently because they were born here and are second or third generation Hispanics. For legal reasons, the official language and all legal documents are done in English.  Our meetings, private conversations, etc. can and are conducted in both English and Spanish.  Any e-mail received in Spanish, it's answered in Spanish.

HAFree Supports...

ATHEISM

The lack of belief in a god or gods. Nothing more! Atheism does not make any claims for or against the existence of gods.  It only talks about a lack of belief, not what atheists do believe; for this there are other terms such as secular humanists, naturalists, realists, and even Pastafarians.

FREETHINKER

A person who thinks and uses critical thinking skills without appealing to  authority, traditions, or dogmas.  Freethinkers create their own opinions based on facts, evidence, and reason.

"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should `make no law respecting establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and state."  - Thomas Jefferson (1802)
