We are thrilled to introduce the recipient of the 2020 Hector Avalos’ scholarship.

The Dr. Hector Avalos’ scholarship offered by HAFree in partnership with the Secular Student Alliance (SSA) grants $1,500 to a Hispanic secular-activist student. This year, we reviewed more than 140 applications, and we were very impressed with the secular activism our fellow Hispanics are organizing in all states and Puerto Rico.

It is thus a great honor and privilege that HAFree awards Reina the 2020 Hector Avalos Scholarship.

Reina, a senior at the University of Arizona, is on a career path to becoming a microbiologist. She has been inspired by the current COVID-19 pandemic to focus her studies on pathogens and viruses.

We celebrate her passion! In the US, there is an underrepresentation of Hispanic women in science and technology. Hispanic women make up almost 10% of the US population, but when you consider the science and technology fields, they make up less than 2%.

Reina, who identifies as an agnostic, has served as the President of the SSA at the University of Arizona, which has helped her to become more confident and outspoken about being non-religious. She has planned weekly meetings, volunteer days, and a range of events, including a “Send an Atheist to Church” charity fundraiser. She has turned this space into a safe haven for students to express their opinions, beliefs, or lack thereof. In 2021, she hopes to grow the SSA’s community and to promote secular ideals and values.

Both the applicants and the scholarship recipient exemplify HAFree’s and SSA’s mission by proudly expressing their secular identities, building welcoming and inclusive communities, and promoting strong secular values. We know they will continue to enrich our society through their activism, and we are honored to work with amazing student leaders. Reina’s interests in microbiology make her one of the very few Hispanic women in this field, and someone who not only has a bright personal future but also one that is much needed in our society. For all these, HAFree congratulates Reina for her great goals, hard work, and critical thinking skills.

Estamos encantados de presentar a la beneficiaria de la beca Hector Avalos 2020.

La beca del Dr. Héctor Avalos ofrecida por HAFree en asociación con Secular Student Alliance (SSA) otorga $1,500 a un estudiante hispano activista secular. Este año, revisamos más de 140 solicitudes y quedamos muy impresionados con el activismo que nuestros compañeros hispanos están adelantando en todo el país y en Puerto Rico.

Por lo tanto, es con gran honor y privilegio que HAFree ha seleccionado a Reina como la ganadora de la Beca Héctor Ávalos 2020. Reina, estudiante de último año de la Universidad de Arizona, está en camino a convertirse en microbióloga. La pandemia actual de COVID-19 ha inspirado a Reina a centrarse en patógenos y virus conocimientos y habilidades que había utilizado antes para formular soluciones para el cambio climático y mejorar el medio ambiente. ¡En HAFree celebramos su pasión! En los Estados Unidos, hay una representación insuficiente de mujeres hispanas en la ciencia y la tecnología. Las mujeres hispanas constituyen casi el 10% de la población de Estados Unidos, pero si se consideran los campos de la ciencia y la tecnología, representan menos del 2%.

Reina, quien se identifica como agnóstica, se ha desempeñado como presidenta de la SSA en la Universidad de Arizona, lo que la ha ayudado a tener más confianza y franqueza sobre no ser religiosa. Ella ha planeado reuniones semanales, días de voluntariado y una variedad de eventos, incluido un evento de recaudación de fondos de caridad al que llamaron“Envíe un ateo a la iglesia”. Ella ha convertido este espacio en un refugio seguro para que los estudiantes expresen sus opiniones, creencias o falta de ellas. En 2021, Reina espera hacer crecer la comunidad estudiantil y promover los ideales y valores seculares.

Tanto los solicitantes como la beneficiaria de la beca ejemplifican la misión de HAFree y SSA al expresar con orgullo sus identidades seculares, construir comunidades acogedoras e inclusivas y promover valores seculares sólidos. Sabemos que continuarán enriqueciendo nuestra sociedad a través de su activismo, y nos sentimos honrados de trabajar con increíbles líderes estudiantiles. El interes de Reina en la microbiología la convierten en una de las pocas mujeres hispanas en este campo, y alguien que no solo tiene un futuro personal brillante sino también uno que es muy necesario en nuestra sociedad. Por todo esto, HAFree felicita a Reina por sus grandes metas, trabajo duro y pensamiento crítico.
